On the western front, French soldiers observed a horse breaking free of it’s handlers and making a dash toward the German trench. The horse was shot. The French realized that a horse’s body was just large enough to provide a hiding place for a man, so they ordered a papier-mache horse corpse to be built. This tactic was employed several times along the Western front.
